Marital and Family Therapy

Therapy can operate its' personal relations individually, but the results are obtained much faster if it is done with the couple or with all of the members of a family, focusing the relationships as a whole. My clinic is a safe place in which each person can be listened to by me and by the other members of the group. I work as an interpreter of the individual or group demands, not as a judge. I analyze the strength of the relationships and where each one's experience can contribute to the harmony of the group. When analyzing the problem in patients' relations and in the personal history that each person of the group tells about his/her participation in hi/her personal relations we are able to discover patterns and standards of behavior in the family that can be hidden. As soon as the group members begin to see each other more clearly more simple patterns and relationship conditions start to develop. The patient can remember what brought him/her closer to the others of the group and what each can offer to the others while their relationships develop.

How to choose a Therapist

Choosing a good therapist isn't much different from choosing any other good professional such as a doctor or a dentist. One needs to do some research, cross reference and talk to this professional in order to clear up any doubts and feel if there actually is a good and franc relationship with him/her. As the service of this professional will be to help the client to solve his/her life and relationship problems, this professional should have the following characteristics:

  • be receptive, warm and have a good sense of humor to develop a friendly, positive and trustworthy relationship with the client
  • be emotionally healthy with no affectations, so that the client can feel comfortable
  • be franc and direct in order to answer all the client's questions even if the answers aren't the ones the client wants to hear
  • have the same fundamental values as the client so as to be respected by him/her - be capable of listening to the client's complaints
  • provide names of clients what can give references about his/her work
  • speak in a clear tone and language without using technical terms so that the client can really get the message
  • show interest in the client
  • clearly indicate which are the client's rights and obligations and the price of the sessions
  • be available for phone calls between sessions whenever the clients feels it's necessary to talk, or even for critical moments
  • have the ability to communicate equally to both parents and their adolescent childre
